Makos, the warlock that helped us te find Vizeran in the first place, is here again in Mantol-Derith on some business.

Bring the grimoires we found te him and see if he can shed light on what the wizard's planning.

Either Drizzt was wrong, or Jarlaxle is playin' one of them drow politic games.

Steps[edit | edit source]

  • Meet with Makos
  • Brong the Grimoires to Vizeran DeVir
    • Go to Araj Towwr
    • Delvier Components to Vizeran DeVir
  • Return to Bruenor Battlehammer

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Ah, hello, adventurer! Of course I know it's you, did you think I'd forget the person who dealt with the Vault of the Nine?

Let's not dwell too long on your disguise. I'm rather curious what you're doing here with an "injured" Drizzt Do'Urden.

I've pieced together you're here for old Gromph's grimoire. There are a thousand reasons "why"... perhaps you'd tell me your reason.

Vizeran DeVir
You've returned. I suppose the dwarf could be trusted after all with a simple set of directions.

Give me the grimoires and I will get to work crafting a spell to get us past the Labyrinth and into the Maze Engine.

This spell will take some time. Days, perhaps even weeks. I must have no interruptions while I work.

  • I had a few questions before I give you the grimoires.
Vizeran DeVir
That's to be expected. Ask what you want and I will answer.

We're both partners in this task to destroy Baphomet and the Maze Engine... any information you require, you shall have.

  • How did you know about the elemental grimoires?
Vizeran DeVir
I have various agents that keep me informed about events on the surface world... which includes the threat of the Elemental Cults.

From my research, I've deduced that their power must have been given to them by some creature sick enough to worship the elemental evils.

These grimoires represent the ancient knowledge of the four elements, something which these cults had no desire to lose.

  • And why do you need them for this spell?
Vizeran DeVir
The spell I'm casting will have to get through numerous barriers, both magical and physical.

To do so, I will have to harness the power of all four elements, bend them to my will, and use them as a sort of arrow to pierce through these barriers to allow us to reach the Maze Engine.

After all of this is done, I intend to hunt down whoever was behind the Elemental Cults. Even if you defeat the cults, this person could simply start them again.

  • What is so important about Gromph Baenre's grimoire?
Vizeran DeVir
Do you know of Gromph Baenre? He was the archmage of Menzoberranzan, the one responsible for the current demonic mess we're in now.

In an act of foolhardiness, he summoned Demogorgon into the heart of Menzoberranzan, which beget other demon lords like our "friend" Baphomet.

His grimoire was undoubtedly used to summon Demogorgon... it is only fitting that it be used to end another demon lord.

  • What do you know about the Maze Engine?
Vizeran DeVir
The Maze Engine's creator is unknown, even to the stone giants of Gravenhollow Library.

It has the power to alter reality as we know it, if its wielder knows how to use the device.

Some refer to it as an "Orderer", believing it was made to bring order to chaos.

Of course, such a notion is foolish. No creature, mortal or god, could use such a device wisely.

When we are done with Baphomet, it is best that the Maze Engine is destroyed. No good can come of it.

  • Here are the grimoires. I'll be waiting for word on when the spell is complete.
Vizeran DeVir
Before you depart, I had a question for you. I am risking much working with you and your friends... if Menzoberranzan knew I still lived, they would have an army here to kill me.

I heard of your assault on the drow outpost to recover the grimoire... yet it took you some time to reach my tower.

Why is that? Are you in league with someone from Menzoberranzan?

  • Drizzt and I were attacked by some demons and drow. It took us some time to evade them.
Vizeran DeVir
That is understandable... you were quite close to Menzoberranzan, if I recall correctly.

My apologies for questioning your loyalty. I've been betrayed many times in the past... it is second nature to assume it will happen again.

I will take these grimoires and begin work on the spell. I will send word to your dwarf friend when it is complete.

  • Truthfully? I was afraid you would betray us, so I did some investigating and discovered that was a lie.
Vizeran DeVir
Such honesty... I don't believe you would last long in Menzoberranzan.

I, however, appreciate the truth. You have nothing to fear from me, Adventurer. I only desire two things - to destroy Baphomet and to be left *alone*.

My apologies for questioning your loyalty. I've been betrayed many times in the past... it is second nature to assume it will happen again.

I will take these grimoires and begin work on the spell. I will send word to your dwarf friend when it is complete.

  • I don't need to explain myself to you. Don't my actions prove my loyalty?
Vizeran DeVir
I've learned in the past not to assume anyone's loyalty... especially if insisted.

However, I doubt Drizzt Do'Urden would continue to work beside you if you were not at least somewhat trustworthy.

I will take these grimoires and begin work on the spell. I will send word to your dwarf friend when it is complete.

  • Very well. We'll be waiting to hear from you.

Completion[edit | edit source]

Bruenor Battlehammer
We still don't know if we can be trustin' the drow, eh? I suppose that's what we get for workin' with 'em.

At least we know Vizeran wants te destroy Baphomet. If he plans on killin' us, he'll have te work harder than everyone else who tried.

Looks like we're back te hurryin' up and waitin'. In the meantime, we got plenty of issues with demons and cultists that are demandin' yer attention.
